We all know that there's nothing quite as relaxing as a good long soak in the tub. Whether you like to enjoy a glass of wine, a few pages of a good book or you simply want to lie back and unwind, a bath makes all the difference. But now it seems that baths could help your health in a way beyond reducing your stress levels.
According to recent research, hot baths could help you lose weight and provide benefits similar to exercising - which is good news for those who like regular soaks! Dr Steve Faulkner from Loughborough University looked at the ways that passive heat can affect people's health, revealing that it could burn as many calories as going for a run.
His team conducted a study with 14 people, each of whom stayed in a bath for an hour that was regulated at 40 degrees. The participants also went out for an hour-long cycle to compare the effects on blood sugar control and calorie burning.
While it turned out that cycling for an hour did burn more calories than lying in a bath, an hour-long soak did burn the same number of calories as a 30-minute walk. This means that you could easily increase the calories you burn during the day by ending it with a relaxing bath - which seems like a good option to us!
"The overall blood sugar response to both conditions was similar, but peak blood sugar after eating was about 10 per cent lower when participants took a hot bath compared with when they exercised," said Dr Faulkner.
On top of this, he suggested that baths could help with reducing chronic inflammation, which can cause pain and is related to a number of illnesses, such as type two diabetes. However, it's still important to ensure you get regular exercise, as sadly baths won't serve to replace being active - no matter how much we might want them to.
Of course, if you really want to make the most of a nice hot bath, it pays to have the right products to pop in it. Those who love bubble baths won't be disappointed with our beautiful range of Foam Baths, which deliver lovely thick bubbles and stunning fragrance.
For a wonderfully softening bath, pop one of our Bath Melts in while the water is running. The delicate scents will be released as the shea butter melts, while real flower petals will be left to float on the water's surface. Even if baths weren't good for you, these products are reason enough to indulge regularly.
