School's out for summer: Indoor fun with your kids

A wet summer doesn't have to be boring

The weather can't seem to make up its mind at the moment and it is starting to look like winter is on its way rather than August. While we have all been looking forward to a bit of sunshine, it looks as though we are instead getting the typical British summer.

This doesn't mean that you can't try and make the most of the season, especially if you have children at home now that school is out for summer.

You may not be able to go outside as much as you'd like, but you can definitely have some summer fun indoors until the sun comes out.

Here are some great ways to enjoy the summer holidays with your kids or grandchildren, even if you're stuck inside:

Carpet picnic

If you can't head to the park or beach because of the weather, you don't need to miss out on the fun of a picnic. Why not clear a space on your carpet, set out a blanket and enjoy a picnic in your living room?

All you need to do is pack up your picnic box and create your seating area and you're good to go. You could even make decorations, such as painting flowers, to create more of an outdoor feel.

You may not be able to go outside as much as you'd like, but you can definitely have some summer fun indoors until the sun comes out.

You add to the effect by bringing the outside in with fragrance too. A few spritzes of our Jasmine and Lilac Room Mist will make it seem as though you are relaxing in a flower garden out in the sunshine.

Baking

What better way to keep children occupied than to head to the kitchen to bake up some snacks? Fairy cakes are pretty easy to make even if you don't have much baking experience - you can even buy packs that you just add eggs and water to.

You can get your little ones to help with measuring, mixing and - of course - decorating. This results in hours of entertainment with a sweet payoff at the end.

Water play

Your children may not be able to have a splash around in the sea when the weather is bad, but you can let them enjoy some indoor water play. This is really good for their development as well as a lot of fun.

Popping some toys in the bath - along with some of our foam bath - will give them plenty to do, whether they get in the bath or just enjoy a splash around with their hands.
