'Tis the season for hygge

Hygge is a word that you may not have heard too many times since last winter, but it's one that encompasses everything the season should be all about: cosiness, warmth and happiness.

'Hygge' is actually a Danish word. It has no direct translation in English, but it's essentially about enjoying simple pleasures, celebrating being cosy, and relaxing in comfort and indulgence.

The Scandinavian concept was huge last year, with the shops filled with books on the art of hygge in the run-up to Christmas and Instagram full of images of knitted sock-clad feet next to a flickering candle, or marshmallow-topped mugs of steaming hot chocolate in front of a log fire.

For some of us, hygge is our year-round state, with cosy nights in winning over rowdy nights on the town, while for others, it's lovely to have an excuse to stay at home in front of the fire with a hot drink and a good film instead of having to venture out in the cold for a change.

Think of embracing hygge like a temporary hibernation and you won't be too far wrong. Unfortunately, you will still have to go to work each day, but when you come home, you can get straight into your radiator-warmed pyjamas, eat hot soup by the bucketload and light as many candles as you can fit on your shelves, all in name of the latest trend.

Our Winter Spice Candle in a Tin, which is part of this year's Celebration Collection, would be especially perfect for an evening of hygge, as it features all of the most wonderful scents associated with the season. Think orange, cloves, cinnamon and spices reminiscent of a jug of mulled wine.

Meanwhile, our Vanilla Custard Candle in a Can would provide the ideal accompaniment to that decadent hot chocolate, with sweet notes of vanilla pod and creamy custard really bringing out all of that gorgeous chocolatey scent, adding to the cosy atmosphere you've created.

A relaxing hot bath is another way to bring some hygge into your life - extra hygge points if you light a few candles and have the foresight to make yourself a hot chocolate to drink in the tub.

Hygge might be talked about most in the run-up to Christmas, but it's not just for winter. A cosy night in can be the perfect pick-me-up at any time of year, so make sure you have a good supply of beautifully-smelling candles to hand at all times.
