We've become well known for our candles over the years, developing a large range of scents. But other than the fragrances, what makes our candles so special? We believe it has everything to do with what goes into making them.
Not only are our candles handmade and hand-poured after being mixed with our beautiful fragrances, they are also made from pure soy wax. We believe that this makes them of superior quality to others on the market.
So why exactly do we use soy in our candles instead of paraffin? Here are our reasons for this choice:
Natural and sustainable
Soy wax is made from 100 per cent soybeans, which are totally natural. They are also a sustainable product as they are grown.
The soy wax we use comes from soybeans that have not been in contact with any pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified material. This means the wax is as natural as we can make it.
It also ensures that the wax is completely biodegradable, which is a big plus.
Unlike paraffin candles, soy wax is incredibly clean burning. It doesn't create black soot, which can discolour wax and result in build-up on candle holders.
You'll notice that when your candle is lit, it doesn't give off a visible smoke, which paraffin candles can do. Not only does this release toxins into the air, it doesn't look great and can destroy the fragrance of the candle itself.
Soy wax melts much slower and cooler than paraffin, which means your candle will last much longer.
This ensures that you get hours of enjoyment from your Heyland and Whittle candles, allowing you to make the most of the beautiful fragrances and enjoy better value for money. In fact, you can burn your soy candle for between 30 and 50 per cent longer than a paraffin candle of the same size.
One difference between soy and paraffin wax that you'll notice quite quickly is that soy candles burn much more evenly.
This prevents tunnelling, which is when the candle just burns down in the middle. Eventually, this can mean that your candle won't light properly as the wax ends up just melting and flooding the wick.
So long as you burn our candles for at least an hour and for no longer than four hours, they will burn evenly, meaning you can use them right up to the last bit.
Paraffin wax can contain up to 11 carcinogenic compounds, which could impact your health over an extended period of time. The wax is actually created from petroleum and so contributes towards indoor pollution.
However, soy wax is completely natural and contains no toxins or carcinogenic properties, creating a healthier option.
Soy wax holds onto scents from essential oil much better than paraffin wax. The fact that it is slower burning also means that the fragrance is more slowly released, creating an even and lasting scent that you will still smell once the candle has been blown out.
This creates a really lovely atmosphere and means you aren't hit with a sudden wave of strong fragrance that then disappears, as is often the case with paraffin candles.
