Aromatherapy Awareness Week: What you need to know about essential oils

This week is Aromatherapy Awareness Week in the UK. Taking place from today (Monday June 11th) until Saturday June 16th, the week will see advocates of aromatherapy spreading the message of the power of using essential oils for the benefit of the body and mind.

At Heyland & Whittle, we pride ourselves on using natural ingredients in our handmade products to give them their wonderful scents, and this means essential oils feature in them prominently.

But what is aromatherapy all about, and which Heyland & Whittle products could help with achieving the benefits coveted through this form of therapy?

What is aromatherapy all about?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using aromatic plant extracts and essential oils for various healing purposes. Often, these oils are added to baths or rubbed into the skin to induce calm, ward off infections or heal your skin, for example.

It's a type of holistic healing therapy, and followers of the practice believe that different plants give oils different qualities. For example, lavender oil is well-known for its soothing, calming scent, while tea tree oil is commonly used in healing treatments for cuts.

When you're considering trying out aromatherapy for yourself, always make sure that the oils you are using have been sustainably sourced - this is a guarantee with Heyland & Whittle's health and beauty and home fragrance products - and that they haven't been mixed with anything else, as this could take away some of their power.

So, where can you find essential oils and their benefits in our collection?

Essential oils in our products

Induce calm, ward off infections or heal your skin

Lavender is one of the most well-known fragrances used in aromatherapy, and it features in several Heyland & Whittle products. Using our Citrus & Lavender Soap Bar in a hot bubble bath makes for an incredibly relaxing pamper experience, especially if you light a Citrus & Lavender Candle in a Glass at the same time.

And if you don't want that beautifully soothing scent to disappear after your bath, apply our Citrus & Lavender Body Lotion so you can catch that calming fragrance on your skin for hours afterwards. The lotion also contains almond oil, which is believed to have immune system-boosting benefits.

Lavender is teamed with another calming essential oil, chamomile, in our Sleep Easy collection, which includes a Room Spray, Reed Diffuser and Candle in a Tin for your bedroom, to help relax you, relieve stress and send you off to a blissful sleep.

Rose essential oil is another that's known for its calming properties, so using our Rose Soap Bar in your bath or shower should also help to soothe your stresses and relax your mind. When married with neroli oil, these effects can be even more powerful; in fact, neroli oil is believed to help relieve symptoms associated with both stress and the menopause, including calming hot flushes.

This makes our Neroli & Rose Body Scrub the perfect addition to your bath time routine, allowing you to exfoliate your skin thoroughly, while taking in that gorgeously soothing sweet scent. Finish off with our Neroli & Rose Body Lotion to lock in all of that nourishment, provide your skin with extra moisture and carry that stress-soothing fragrance with you.

Tea tree oil is also known for its healing properties, thanks to its natural antibacterial and antifungal effects. If you suffer from sensitive skin or fungal skin problems, using one of our Tea Tree Soap Bars in your morning shower can help to soothe and moisturise your skin, and its incredibly refreshing and invigorating fragrance will certainly wake you up.
