Top haircare tips for luscious locks

We all do a lot to our hair that can leave it looking a bit limp and lifeless. From excessive heat styling, bleaching and colouring to the huge number of products we use, our tresses can end up looking and feeling like they've seen better days.

Whether you just brush your hair and go or take time on it every day, looking after your locks is important. The condition of your hair affects how it looks, grows and sheds, which means keeping it as healthy as possible is key.

Here are some great haircare tips that will help you look after your locks, as well as keep them looking lovely and repair or prevent any damage from daily styling:

Less is more

When it comes to washing your hair, less really is more. While you might think that you need to wash it every day or every other day, realistically, you shouldn't wash it unless it needs it.

Excessive washing strips your hair of its natural oils, which means it will get dry, be more prone to breakage and generally be much weaker. Even if you use intensive conditioners, it will not help to fully replace what your hair has lost.

Instead, you should leave as long as you can between washes, using products like dry shampoo to refresh your locks. This will allow your hair to hang on to its natural oils.

You should also use a high-quality shampoo and conditioner - such as our Greentea and Grapefruit Shampoo and Conditioner

These products have a lovely fresh scent while also being effective at washing away build-up on your hair and scalp. Complete up with panthenol - derived from vitamin B5 - the shampoo and conditioner will help to moisturise, strengthen, and thicken your hair.

Moisture injection

Giving your hair more moisture at least once a month is a good way to keep it soft, shiny and healthy. Intensive conditioners or hair masques help to moisturise hair more deeply, which improves strength and smoothes hair cuticles.

Even if you don't have especially dry hair, a hair masque used once every couple of weeks can help to repair any damage your tresses may have sustained and serve as a way of protecting against future damage.

Whether you just brush your hair and go or take time on it every day, looking after your locks is important

If you have dry hair, it is important that you use intensive moisture treatments regularly in order to put as much moisture back into your hair as possible. It is also a good idea to maximise their benefits in order to get the best results.

One way to do this is to use a hot towel, wrapping it around your hair while it is covered in your intensive conditioner. The heat will make the hair cuticles open wider so more of the product is able to enter the hair and penetrate deeper.

Simply pour hot - but not boiling water - on a clean towel, give it a slight wring out and wrap your hair up for half an hour. You'll feel the difference almost straight away.

Add strength

It isn't just moisture that your hair needs, it also requires protein. It's protein that actually allows your hair to hang on to any moisture you add to it, so if you have stripped a lot of protein out of your locks through bleaching or heat, they won't hold on to moisture.

This means you need to put protein back into your hair regularly as well as conditioning it. You can do this with natural ingredients, such as eggs and avocado, which contain high amounts of protein.

Make a masque out of these by mixing either eggs or avocado with a natural oil - such as almond - before putting on shampooed hair. Leave the masque on for 20 minutes and then rinse away with lukewarm water before conditioning.

Doing this every two to three weeks can make a huge difference to the strength and feel of your hair.

Heat protection

If you use heat to style your hair, even if it is just a hairdryer, you need to use some form of protection on your tresses. Heat defence sprays or creams help to reflect some of the heat and protect it from stripping moisture and protein from your hair.

You should apply heat protection on freshly washed hair before styling, as well as in between washes if you curl or straighten it with heated appliances.

It is a good idea to use a product that includes oils - like argan or macadamia oils - as these will help to condition your hair further.
