5 ways to make your home feel cooler this summer

We're all hoping that this summer will bring with it high temperatures and brilliant sunshine. If we're lucky enough to avoid the curse of the British summer, you may find that your house starts to get a bit too warm.

While the chances are you'll want to spend as much time outside in the sun as possible, you still want to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Not taking steps to ensure your house is as cool as possible during the summer months can mean it is uncomfortable to be inside.

However, it is easy to make your home feel cooler, so you can escape from the sun and avoid overheating at night. Here are some great ways to cool your house down this season:

Use your blinds

Did you know that around 70 per cent of the unwanted heat in your home comes in from your windows? While you can open a window to counter this, it is a good idea to try and reflect the heat away from your house in the first place.

You can do this by making use of your blinds. If you fully or partially close your blinds, it will help to stop unwanted heat from coming through the window but won't make your room too dark.

If you don't want to keep your blinds closed or you don't have any, try hanging some light curtains - such as some made from chiffon or muslin. This will allow a nice amount of light to enter your room but also keep it lovely and cool.

Open doors

We're all hoping that this summer will bring with it brilliant sunshine

There's nothing worse than opening a door in your home to find that it is like a sauna, especially if you're about to head to bed and your bedroom is far too hot for comfort. Rather than shutting rooms off in your home this summer, make sure you keep doors open to allow cool air to circulate.

Even leaving doors slightly ajar can help your entire home seem cooler, especially if you have your windows open to allow a breeze in. If you're worried about doors slamming due to any wind, use door stops to avoid this.

Keep yourself cool

It is much easier to control the temperature of your body rather than the whole house. If it is getting a bit warm for you, try cooling yourself down as this will help you feel more comfortable.

Why not pour a nice iced drink or put a cool flannel on specific pressure points like your wrists or the back of your neck? You can even pop in the shower to help you feel better, just keep the temperature cool and use a refreshing product like our Greentea and Grapefruit Body Wash

Even a cool summer bath can help you feel less hot and bothered. You can find out how to run the perfect summer bath here.

Make your home smell fresh

If your home smells fresh, it can help you feel a lot cooler. A musty room or one that is scented with a heavy fragrance can make your room seem stuffy and too hot, so it is a good idea to have at least one summer scent to turn to.

Try adding a Clementine and Prosecco Reed Diffuser to your home or keep a Neroli and Rose Room Mist to hand for an instant burst of freshness.
