A day to celebrate your favourite chocolate truffles

A day to celebrate your favourite chocolate truffles

One of the best days of the year, World Chocolate Day, falls on Saturday July 7th. Yes, that's right, an entire day dedicated to all things chocolate.

Chocolate brownies, chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate and chocolate truffles are among life's greatest pleasures. It's hard to pick a favourite from this list, but here, we're going to focus on our love of just one of these delights: chocolate truffles.

Truffles make the perfect gift, and there are few indulgences better in life than sitting down to tuck into a luxury box of chocolates at the end of a long day. Unwrapping the ribbon, sliding off the first layer, then spending the rest of the evening trying to choose whether to have a strawberry cream or white chocolate centre next: bliss.

So, to coincide with World Chocolate Day, we're going to teach you how to make your own, and explain how you can enjoy your favourite truffle centres more often, without having to worry about your waistline.

How to make your own chocolate truffles

Chocolate truffles can be fairly costly, so if you like to give them as a gift at occasions such as Christmas, making your own can save you a lot of money. They're easy and fun to make, and it's a good activity to try with little ones too - just watch out for sticky fingers!

Ganache is the basis of all chocolate truffles, and you can make this by following BBC Good Food's recipe, which involves heating 300 millilitres of double cream and 50 grams of butter in a pan, taking care not to let it boil, then pouring it over around 300 grams of dark chocolate, broken into small pieces. The heat from the cream should naturally melt the chocolate, but you may need to give it a few stirs to encourage it to do so.

At this stage, you can either leave your truffles plain, rich and chocolate-y, or you can turn them into 'artisan' chocolates by adding extra ingredients. For example, you could add chopped nuts, a sprinkle of dried ginger, some chocolate chips, or even some colourful hundreds and thousands for a child-friendly twist. For the grown-ups, add a drop of whisky.

Leave your ganache to cool and set in the fridge (this could take around eight hours, so leaving it overnight is a good idea), then shape it into balls. Roll in some extra nuts or sprinkles, or even just cocoa powder or icing sugar for a gorgeous finishing touch.

Enjoy truffle-inspired scents

Whether the soft, smooth strawberry cream, the tangy orange or the divisive coconut is your favourite truffle centre, it's an unfortunate fact that you cannot survive solely on a diet of these indulgent treats. If you find yourself craving your favourite, then sometimes just the scent of it can be enough - and you can find many chocolate truffle classics in our range of Kitchen Garden Candles.
