Bring your favourite book to life with scent

When it's cold and frosty outside, there are few cosier ways to spend an evening than getting into fresh, snuggly pyjamas, lighting the fire and curling up with a good book.

Spending a couple of hours in the company of a cracking novel can be an incredibly relaxing form of self-care, which we all need every now and again, especially when the harsh winter weather leaves us feeling a little rundown.

Add a hot cup of tea and a blanket into the mix and you'll feel even more relaxed - so much so that the only thing likely to make the experience even more sensual and soothing is lighting a scented candle.

We've all seen those Instagram posts celebrating hygge that pair fluffy socks with gorgeous candles and good reads, and you can easily emulate this for yourself, going the extra mile by matching your candle to the themes of your book.

Scent is amazingly powerful, allowing us to close our eyes, breathe in and imagine we're somewhere completely different, meaning you can bring your favourite book to life and immerse yourself in another world with a cleverly chosen candle to accompany your reading session.

Here's a few suggestions from the Heyland & Whittle range that we think would pair perfectly with these much-loved books:

Perfume by Patrick Suskind

Patrick Suskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer follows a perfumer in 18th century France and it's all about the protagonist's relationship with the incredibly evocative sense of smell.

The descriptions of the different scents used in the powerful perfumes at the centre of the novel are brilliantly vivid, as the author devotes long passages to discussing the different notes of various flowers and natural essences.

Scent is amazingly powerful

Lighting our Vetiver & Musk Candle in a Glass with its eastern-inspired, warm, musky aromas and extract of vetiver, an Indian grass root that is commonly used in perfumes will help to make some of those descriptions even more intensely vivid, bringing the captivating scenes to life.

Our Bergamot & Lime Candle in a Glass should have a similar effect, albeit bringing the descriptions of the more citrusy fragrances to life. Its scent is reminiscent of a Mediterranean grove - ideal for this novel's setting.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling

Of course, magic is what the Harry Potter series is best known for, but there are also some extremely powerful descriptions of food and their smells in JK Rowling's novels, perhaps most prominently in the first in the series, the Philosopher's Stone.

In this book, the reader is treated to mouth-watering descriptions of the start-of-term and Halloween feasts, at which Harry's favourite item is always the treacle tart, while his friend Ron Weasley favours anything he can fit into his mouth.

Our food-inspired range of Candles in a Can would be the perfect candles to light to accompany a night curled up with a Harry Potter novel, with the Vanilla Custard Candle in a Can in particular ideal for when you get to those descriptions of the glorious Hogwarts desserts.

Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell

This is the book that inspired the phenomenon that was the Sex and the City TV series, which saw Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha regularly sipping on cosmopolitan cocktails in Manhattan's swankiest bars.

If the girls were newly on our screens today, prosecco would most definitely be their tipple, and our Clementine & Prosecco Candle in a Glass would make a great accompaniment to a SATC reading session anyway, with its sweet cocktail-inspired scent making you feel as though you're actually in a New York cocktail bar.

The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding by Agatha Christie

The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding is one of Agatha Christie's much-loved Poirot stories, centred around a Christmas time mystery set at an English country house. It's the perfect novel for cosy winter nights in and you can make yourself feel even more Christmassy while reading it by lighting our Winter Spice Candle in a Glass, which is part of this year's Celebration Collection.

With warm, spicy notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves paired with a sharp burst of orange, it smells just like a hot mug of mulled wine or a Christmas cake fresh from the oven - a night in reading really can't get much more cosy than this.
