Embrace the tropical trend this summer

Tropical-inspired prints featuring vibrant palm trees, colourful flamingos and eye-catching pineapples are one of this year's big summer homeware trends.

We can't help but notice an increase in these products coinciding with the start of a certain Love Island over on ITV2, but you have to admit that they are lovely and summery, whatever your TV opinions!

Naturally, some people will have reservations about introducing pineapple or cactus-adorned items into their homes for fear that they will look a little tacky or naff, but that doesn't have to be the case at all.

So, what is the best way to embrace the tropical trend in your home this summer? From furnishings to food inspiration, here are our top tips for bringing this fashion to your abode:

Tropical but minimal

The best way to introduce a new trend to your home is to start small. Look for soft furnishings such as cushions, throws or perhaps a rug in bright, tropical colours, with a pineapple pattern or with a subtle flamingo motif, for example.

This will bring just a hint of the tropical trend to your decor, without being too 'in your face'. It also means that you can easily change your cushions or throws for something else when the season changes or the trend begins to date, without having to spend too much money.

Another way to bring the trend to your home would be through ornaments, but try to steer clear of garish colours, instead opting for classier copper or rose gold designs. These are also very trendy right now, and can be a much more elegant option that the bright yellows, pinks and greens typically associated with a tropical theme.

Taste the tropics

If you don't like the idea of transforming your home decor, bring the tropical trend to your kitchen table instead. Fresh, juicy, zesty flavours are exactly what are needed during the summer months, with ingredients like pineapple, coconut and lime absolutely perfect for the season.

Slice fresh pineapple, lemon, kiwi, lime or watermelon to enjoy in cold drinks for a beautifully refreshing beverage. The kids will love the fun, grown-up cocktail look of their drink and it's a good way to get some extra fruit down them too.

Try tossing some of these tropical fruits through your usual salads to jazz them up a little and make them feel even more summery, and experiment with coconut and lime, or mango-flavoured marinades for chicken.

Baking with tropical ingredients is also good fun, and a retro pineapple upside down cake is super easy to make. Simply line a cake tin with pineapple rings in syrup, then pour over your favourite Victoria sponge mixture and bake. When you turn your tin upside down, you should be left with a beautiful bright pattern - studding it with a few cherries will give an even more gorgeous look.

Alternatively, combine all of your favourite tropical flavours together in one recipe; yes, you could make a pina colada, or you could bake a pina colada-inspired cake. There's a fabulous Paul Hollywood recipe over on the BBC Food website for a pina colada Madeira cake that comprises a coconut-flavoured sponge topped with coconut and rum buttercream that would make an ideal indulgence for summer.

Exotic home fragrance

Remember that introducing a new trend to your home needn't just be about aesthetics and taste, as smell can play a part too. Bringing in tropical-inspired home fragrance products is another temporary but effective way to incorporate a new fashion, bringing an extra level to your decor.

Pineapple has such a sweet yet incredibly refreshing aroma, and we've done our best to capture that distinctive summery fragrance in our Pineapple Candle in a Can. With its quirky tin-inspired packaging, the smell that it emits while burning is very like that you get when you open a can of tinned pineapple for a fruit salad - or that pineapple upside down cake.

It's a similar story with our Coconut Milk Candle in a Can; light it, and your rooms will be filled with a sweet summery aroma that could well come from a fresh coconut newly cracked in two.

Burning these candles will fill your home with a stunning tropical scent that will make you feel like you're on a beach on a paradise island, even when our Great British weather is drizzling away outside.

Fruity mandarin and strawberry-inspired candles also feature in our range of Candles in a Can. Shop the full range of food-themed candles here
